I think I'll have a "Cesar"...

This statement probably conjures up the image of an icy, spicy Clamato cocktail, right?  Mmmmm....

Sadly the "Ceasar" I need most is spelled with no "a".

In case you don't know him, his name is Cesar Milan.  AKA, "The Dog Whisperer".

We first learned about Cesar Milan several years ago as we did some research for appropriate techniques to use with our growing puppy, Cyrus.  Watching his television series, The Dog Whisperer, on National Geographic is like watching a magician at work!   This guy blows me away!   Visit his site to watch some amazing video clips!   Cesar Milan teaches that 'speaking' to dogs' natural instincts and behaviours as pack animals, is the key to having happy, healthy, balanced family pets!

We jumped in with both feet!  Cesar's mantra is:  "Exercise, Discipline, then affection".

Our dogs are lucky dudes.  They have been walked twice a day, every day (and I mean, EVERY DAY, 365 DAYS PER YEAR - Christmas Day, after parties, before work, etc.) ever since they've lived in our house.   I have to give Mark all the credit though - he's the one who makes sure they get every walk, every day.  I go most nights, but on the morning walks, nowadays, he's usually on his own with the crazy mutts. (I always get a clear reminder of how dedicated he is when he goes out of town on business trips and it's ME & the crazy pups twice a day, every day).     Moral of the story.... my boyfriend is a bloody ROCKstar!!!

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaanyway....

Long story, shortened:  Cesar says naughty dogs can be rehabilitated by ensuring they go on purposeful, leashed walks.  Walks where you, the pet-parent, establish yourself as the pack leader.   This applies whether your dogs are big and burly, like ours, or tiny pocket dogs!

So tell me why...  PLEASE CESAR...  tell me why these dogs are, right now, BARKING up a storm?   BARK, BARK, BARK.    I want to sit them down, school-teacher style, throw on my specs and a pencil-skirt, grab my pointer & say,

"Dogs, you get your walks in the dark, rain, wind, snow, etc... your food costs more than our food (more on that in another post), you get love & snuggles (after exercise and discipline) and you're BARKING, WHY?"

Barkerville, BC...   you've got nothing on us!!!     Sigh....

Bark, Bark,

Christine (the Loyal Subject).

  1. When my twin boys were toddlers, I tried to raise them "Cesar Milan" style (I loved watching his show even though I did not have an actual dog to raise). I figured my underlings were like rambunctious little puppies, needing constant training and correcting, and I would be their alpha-mommy and show them the way!! I would stand right in front of them, obviously being "larger than life" due to there being no chance of them being taller, nor larger than me (until now!), and I would get their undivided attention, use that "sssht" sound Mr. Milan utilizes frequently, and then explain exactly, in humanspeak, what I required from them, and how they must amend their behaviour at that particular moment. The most awesome Mommy-Cesar Milan moments I had were in the very beginning wherein my boys would look at me in amazement, as they were blown away by my new "parenting" skills....of course, as children do, they got used to us trying to get the upper hand and cleverly learn how to "work around us". Of course, I gave up, and had to move on to other tactics. With that said, Cesar Milan can definitely teach us all a thing or two about raising more disciplined canines and children. But like anything, our own discipline skills requires constant training, reminding and tweaking internally...Anyways, I could really relate to your Cesar moment, and I love the name you have given to your dog-child. With that said, I wonder if there is a Cesar Milan shirt on there with "Shht" on it. That would be funny, and I just might like to get my hands on one!

  2. Oh Cheryl... you are an absolute genius!!! You just reminded me... that rather than sit them down in and ask them why their barking. I should have just said "shhht" WITH PURPOSE!

Thank you so much for reading... :) I think you're my sole-reader (and soul-reader), and I'm really okay with that. xo

    1. Well, I don't think I will be your only reader...you just started!! Thank you for letting me comment on your first 2 entries. I am a newbie, as your new reader...I thought I would let you get warmed up, and then share this with some dog-loving people I know...that is if I want to share you with them. lol. I think this is awesome, and who knows where this will lead you, while you are leading the doggies! And heck, you don't even have to publish everything I comment on...and just in case you don't actually edit my comments, please be sure I will keep it canine-rated! xo
